Welcome to ICON – ARTLAB,
Icon Painting Workshop in Heraklion, Crete.
Here, we create icons following Byzantine originals. We start by preparing the wood - which includes applying the traditional gesso, then go on to design the subject, paint the icon and, finally, varnishing the wood to protect the icon from environmental pollutants. For paints, we use icon painting powders dissolved in egg and vinegar (egg tempera).
Our workshop stocks wood for icon painting (various sizes), prepared with excellent materials.
Our love for the art of icon painting, our patience & attention to detail and, always, our devotion, help us to create icons, essentially transforming a piece of wood into a means of worship!
The icon is not a simple religious painting, but a representation full of symbolism.
Holy faces are depicted on the icon’s wood. Serene faces full of spirituality, etched on unwavering paths of faith and tradition, testify to the power and history of Byzantine Art - an art that has been handed down with reverence from generation to generation. We create our icons with this same reverence for the history of Byzantine Art.
At the ICON – ARTLAB Icon Painting Workshop in Heraklion, Crete, the times when we are creating our icons are, for us, moments of peace and contemplation, always leading to a truly unique work!

In our workshop, we also carry out preservation and restoration work on icons & paintings, always with reverence and understanding of the works our clients bring to us. It is extremely important to carry out preservation work on old icons to safeguard their beauty for generations to come.
